AbstractSince the early 80s Japan has placed great emphasis on R&D in the life sciences and biotechnology, and has become a keen competitor for the United States. This interest is reflected in the expenditure in universities and private industry and in the increase in numbers of researchers involved.The indigenous research base and rapidly expanding pool of well-educated manpower mean that impressive achievements may be expected in the life sciences from Japan in the coming decades.
