A recent report1describing the facile rearrangement of piperidine epoxide, 6b, into 3-formyl-3-phenylpyrrolidine, 7b, with BF3etherate prompts us to present results obtained from our investigation of the reaction of 1-carbamoyl-3,4-epoxy-4-phenylpiperidines with several different Lewis Acids. Our interest in examining this particular reaction arose from a need to prepare 4-phenyl-3-piperidones, such as compound 3.
