Some endocrine disorders ultimately traceable to hypothalamic dysfunction may represent impaired stimulation of the hypothalamic-secreting cell by the appropriate neurotransmitter rather than a defect in (or destruction of) the cell itself. If so, might it be possible to treat some endocrine diseases by drugs that alter neurotransmitter metabolism? Among the already available candidates are some antidepressants and alpha and beta blockers.
