Endothelial cell products are physiologically diverse. Vasoactivities include both dilation and constriction, and—very important in the context of ischemic heart disease—endothelial factors are known to inhibit platelet aggregation. Disruption of vascular endothelium therefore may be a prime event in thrombogenesis and in the initiation and development of stenotic or occlusive coronary lesions.
