AbstractWith the increase in cost of equipment and public expenditure cuts there has been a decline in research equipment purchases in UK universities since the late 1970s. To counteract this effect there is potential for sharing equipment both in terms of spare capacity and time use. The initial costs would be considerable, but the experience of the University of Iowa has shown that a well managed sharing system can help to obtain better value for money from existing equipment expenditure and have important intangible benefits.
