One of the important problems in the application of sheet molding compounds (SMC) in automobiles is how to join different structures together. In a previ- ous paper [1] a comparison between (adhesive) bonding strength and (metal) bolting strength was studied. It was found that bolting gave better joining strength than bonding. However, bolting creates stress concentration in the SMC and may be inconvenient in some applications.
