A careful musculoskeletal survey should be an integral part of the pediatric examination at birth and should be repeated in its entirety at visits during the first year; the few minutes thus spent will often make possible earlier and more effective correction or amelioration of congenital orthopedic defects. A guide is presented for the development of a personal technique of systematic review.
