SummaryIn our laboratory we use a modification of Westergren’s classical method for erythrocyte sedimentation rate determination. Five ml of blood are collected in a test tube containing heparin solution. This heparinized blood is afterwards diluted with sodium citrate solution. Several aspects of this method have been studied statistically with results from heallhy young individuals (65 males, 172 females).It was found that :1) reproductibility is good;2) results are apparently not influenced by a greater volume of blood in the test tube;3) erythrocyte sedimentation rate values with this method usually run parallel with classical Westergren values, although it is necessary to«translate»the usual norms. It was found that a limit-value of 8 mm for men (classical method) corresponds with 13 mm with this modified method and the similar limit of 10 mm becomes 18 mm for females.
