Abstract.Organ cultures of fetal rat masticatory mucosa inoculated with pooled extracts from bacterial plaque were examined by electron microscopy. In contrast to controls, the test group exhibited pronounced tissue and cellular degeneration, e.g., abnormally wide intercellular spaces, disruption of the basal lamina, vacuolation of the cytoplasm and degeneration of various cytoplasmic organelles.
