A new approach to treating erectile dysfunction could greatly improve quality of life for millions of men. Erectile dysfunction is a particular problem for men with diabetes mellitus. Over 50% of this population experience erectile problems within the first 10 years of diagnosis, yet only 5-10% seek treatment. This is partly due to the stigma attached to the condition, but is also a result of the unappealing therapy options that are available, such as penile injection or surgical implants. Now, a new, noninvasive method of treating erectile dysfunction has been developed, which is, according to recent study results, highly effective. The study investigators presented the phase III trial results of the new system at the 55th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association [Atlanta, US; June 1995].
