The discovery of the important role played by cell surface receptors for insulin in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism has opened up new vistas both in the classification and therapeutic approaches to diabetes. Perhaps the most helpful realization has been that, more often than not, diabetics produce normal amounts of insulin but suffer from defects or deficiencies related to insulin receptors.
