Defects and impurities affect many of the properties of solids which have practical importance. These include optical, electrical and mechanical behaviour, as well as stability against degradation. Accurate quantitative calculations are now possible in quite a few cases. This article describes the ideas and methods involved, including some of the ways basic understanding can help in applied problems.
