Although the anemias that are sequelae of exposure to therapeutic irradiation or cytotoxic drugs are usually self-limited, other forms of aplastic anemia—both inherited and acquired—carry a grim prognosis. Nevertheless, the focus is on“definitive treatment”of the highly lethal anemias in this first of a series of articles on progress against blood diseases.
