Stabilizing effects of a magnetic field gradient in a perpendicular shock wave on electron‐cyclotron‐drift instability

摘要:

It is shown that the magnetic‐field gradient in a shock wave can result in a stabilizing effect on the electron‐cyclotron‐drift instability and consequently tends to reduce the growth rate significantly. The present discussion generalizes the earlier work of Sanderson and Priest who also considered similar problems.
