This paper deals with the nature of plasma (which is becoming more and more to be considered as a fourth state of matter), its methods of generation, the sometimes paradoxical motion of the charge carriers in a vacuum and in a gas, the conditions in which a strongly or fully ionized plasma can be confined by magnetic fields (the so-called ‘magnetic bottle’), describes the main types of plasma waves, and eventually considers some major applications, both industrial and astrophysical.
