Abstract—Reductone (HOCH2COCHO), a keto‐aldehyde produced by thermal degradation of some sugars, at alkaline pHs, blocks the excision repair of DNA lesions in uv‐irradiated wild typeEscherichia coli.This probably occurs as a result of inhibition of the exonucleolytic activity of DNA polymerase I.
