AbstractThe paper shows how the technique of dynamic programming was applied to the problem of determining the optimum mix of widths of steel used to‘pack’a transformer coil.The approach enables the designer to specify and vary the number of widths to be incorporated into the design. It transpires that, beyond a relatively small number, the‘coverage’obtained is largely independent of the coil diameter.
