Whether it is to better their sports performance or to look sleeker in their uniforms, many athletes face particular pressures to lose weight. Despite the public's growing awareness of eating disorders, athletes continue to struggle with them—often at risk to their health. The challenge for primary care physicians is not only to learn the warning signs of these disorders, but also to convince athletes to get medical treatment to overcome them.
