&NA;The increase in the incidence and prevalence of young children with autism coupled with the recent popularity of the Lovaas method for intervention have created a variety of dilemmas for public policy makers and families. Questions include the following: Should the Lovaas methodology be considered an entitlement under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)? In a family‐centered paradigm, how should decisions regarding choice of intervention strategy be made? How should expensive, one‐to‐one programs be financed? What is the role of the health insurance community in financing this program? Lovaas as a symbol for larger public policy issues is a focus of discussion.
