This is the first of a series of articles intended to explain the principles behind the operation of a frequently encountered type of AC machine: the induction motor. The articles will briefly discuss the characteristics of various types of electric motor, indicating which features dictate the selection of a particular type for a given application. After this brief introduction to electric motors in general, we will proceed to consider the induction motor in more detail.
