This classic technique deserves wider application than in the laboratory identification of cultured organisms for which it is now most often used. In particular, direct staining of clinical specimens and examination of the slides by the physician is urged as an invaluable shortcut to early clinical decisions, including those for specific additional studies. Guidelines are given for doing the stain as well as a“portfolio”of its results.
