The luminous emissivity is caused by soot formed from partial combustion and so depends knowingly on the relative rates of the processes of heating and oxygen admixture with the fuel. To predict luminous radiation we therefore need to know the relation between emissivity and soot concentration and the rise and fall of soot concentration along the flame.
