In this first article of a series on arrhythmias, the groundwork is laid for discussions of the clinical effects of ischemia on the heart's electrical conduction system. It is stressed that although arrhythmias are a major cause of death after myocardial infarction, they may also arise when myocardial cells are“sick”rather than necrotic; this is the most common explanation for“sudden death.”
