AbstractA new tool for addressing complex database analyses, full‐text co‐word analysis (database tomography), is described from both an historical and practical perspective. This article traces its origins in computational linguistics and summarizes the development of co‐word analysis for research evaluation. It presents actual and potential applications of the techniques to current problems facing those involved ingathering competitive intelligence. © 1994 John Wiley&Son
