The interferons were first recognized as potential antiviral agents a quarter century ago. It has since become apparent that they also are potential anticancer agents. With solution of the supply problems at hand, clinical trials should soon be possible. This second in a series of four articles on clinical virology reviews the possible mechanisms of the interferons in the context of practical therapeutics.
