Leaf necroses, chlorophyll destruction and sulphur accumulation followed from SO2fumigation ofMentha piperitaL. andArabidopsis thalianaL. A SO2dependent decrease in the cell sap pH occurred in both species, butA. thalianashowed a less effective buffering capacity as compared withM. piperita.Exposure to SO2resulted in a decreased N content inH. piperitaand in an increased N content inA. thaliana. M. piperitaappeared to be able to remove SO2from the air bringing about a pollutant sink.
