摘要:
The results of one direct test of Holt's “cultural shock” theory for sectarianism have been questioned because of a biased sampling frame. In a secondary analysis of data from the Lenski Detroit Area Study and the Southern Appalachian Studies, we test whether rural migrants are more sectarian—in attitude or in religious organization preference—than residents at places of origin and destination. We also test for church attendance, frequency of devotional practice, communalism, and anomie. Our analysis is limited to white Protestants. The findings do not indicate that migrants experience cultural shock and turn to sectlike religious expressions.
