Theoretically, proteinuria can result from defects or malfunctioning at any of several points in the filtration and excretory mechanisms that normally safeguard protein conservation. Advancing knowledge of glomerular structure, combined with improved methods of measuring the amounts and kinds of excreted protein, is permitting inferences to be drawn concerning where and how disease may derange these normal homestatic mechanisms.
