摘要:

The past half century has witnessed not one but two revolutions in the development of medicine. In parallel we have seen a transformation of our understanding of normal and disease processes and of the clinician's ability to understand and manage diseases. At the outset our focus was limited to the target organs and the effects of disease upon them. Today we have arrived at a remarkable level of understanding of the molecular and submolecular events underlying health and disease. When future generations view this period, they will undoubtedly be intensely interested in the men and women whose work produced these revolutions. In this context, the ability to record the thought processes of these individuals through the techniques of“oral history”will provide invaluable insights. It is in this belief that Hospital Practice will reproduce a series of interviews conducted by cardiologist Allen B. Weisse of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School. They were originally published asConversations in Medicine: The Story of Twentieth-Century American Medicine in the Words of Those Who Created It.We are grateful to the publisher, New York University Press, Washington Square, New York, for permitting us to republish them.
