The destabilization of the annite component in biotite, due to the presence of sulfur, has been studied by means of hydrothermal synthesis experiments in the temperature interval 485–575°C. Equilibrium relations between the composition of co-existing pyrrhotite and biotite in a system also containing magnetite and sanidine as solid phases are demonstrated. The composition of the vapor phase and the enthalpies of various reactions have also been calculated.
