Before the development of synthetic dyes, natural materials and extracts were used to colour wood, but few remain in use.Present day colouring uses synthetic dyes or pigment or natural pigment dissolved or dispersed in water, hydrocarbon solvents, alcohols or glycols.Properties of each group and factors affecting choices of combinations for colouring solid wood are reviewed both for indoor and outdoor use.
