In the last years the measurement of ionizing radiation by means of scintillation detectors has reached some important improvements. These developments on scintillators and photodetectors were induced by the demands of medicine (computer tomography), of high energy physics and of space research, such as high efficiency and energy resolution, short luminescence rise and decay time and the absence of phosphorescence (afterglow), issues in measuring in high intense beams or in the high energy range and miniaturizing of detectors. Some of the main inherent limitations of conventional PM-tubes as low quantum efficiency, large size and weight, inadequate ruggedness, high power consumption and sensitivity against external magnetic and electric fields are overcome to silicon photodiodes, silicon avalanche photodiodes, HgI2,-photodetectors and other solid state devices as potential replacement for vacuum PM-tubes. Moreover a neiv principle of monolithical solid stale scintillation detector is discussed.
