Tim history of inebriety is so intimately connected with civilization that, when I was asked by our Secretary to read a paper on some historical aspects of alcoholism, I thought I could not choose a more interesting subject than the references to alcoholism in the literature of ancient Greece and Rome, especially as it is nearly thirty years since the subject of inebriety in ancient times was brought before this Society, when Dr. TY. L.
