There is strong evidence that sigmoidoscope screening can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer mortality by as much as 70%, but the case for extensive fecal occult blood testing is less convincing. Flexible sigmoidoscopy performed once every Ave to 10 years in patients aged 50 to 75 appears to be warranted; however, many practical barriers to widespread implementation still need to addressed.
