This talk discusses ground and excited states of hadrons that are not explained by the quark model. This includes “extra” states, which are generally interpreted in terms of gluonic degrees of freedom or as multiquark configurations. It also includes “missing” states which are predicted by the quark model but are not yet observed. We concentrate on the more recent advances in this field, giving examples in both the meson and baryon sectors. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.
