In the hope of identifying a suitable material for reconstructive tubal surgery, the authors replaced a portion of the uterine horns of 2 groups of New Zealand white rabbits (N = 6, N = 4) with specially prepared human umbilical vein. This material provided an acceptable graft in all animals tested by the following criteria: acceptance of the graft by the host animal, complete endothelialization of the graft lumen by the adjacent endothelium, and maintenance of patency and normal gamete transport as shown by recovery of fertilized ova and delivery by 1 animal of full-term offspring.
