SummaryFrom 1956 to 1962, 8 patients were admitted to the medical department of Brugmann Hospital, for acute CCI4intoxication.In 6 cases, intoxication followed inhalation of dry cleaners containing CCI4, used for cleaning clothes or furniture. In 2 cases, it was due to the accidental ingestion of C Cl4.The clinical features were :toxic hepatitis with moderate jaundice and high level of serum transaminases;renal failure of rather short duration.Fever and hypertension were sometimes observed. The outcome was favourable in 7 cases : 4 patients recovered without the use of the artificial kidney, and 3 after only one dialysis. One of the two patients who had ingested CCI4died from profuse haemorrhage on the fifth week after intoxication despite five dialysis.The dangers inherent to the domestic use of C Cl4-containing cleaners are re-emphasized.
