More than 2,000 cases of thoracic aortic dissection occur in the United States each year. The diagnosis is considered in patients with anterior chest pain or back pain of a "tearing" nature. Imaging studies to confirm the diagnosis include CAT scan, MRI scan, angiography, or ultrasound. Proximal dissections are treated surgically, while distal dissections are initially managed conservatively.
