This rather recondite and specialized group of inherited anomalies is of very limited clinical significance; none is common, many are controllable, and some are benign. Collectively, however, these derangements have helped throw light on one of the most fundamental mechanisms in physiology: the processes by which molecules are transported into and out of the cell.
