This paper examines the apparent ‘‘gained’’ and ‘‘missed’’ energy associated with the omnidirectional constructive and destructive interferences of electromagnetic wave radiated from two closely spaced sources. While widespread misconceptions concerning the phenomena, as reflected in semipopular science writing, have been partially corrected in a recent article employing qualitative arguments, no rigorous treatments of the problem have been available. This article presents a theoretical analysis of the problem and concludes that the phenomena are attributable to the effect of mutual coupling between the sources.
