Heuristic procedures provide a useful tool in problem solving situations. However, their description and the study of the role they play in the solution process to lingustic problems have generally been ignored in linguistics. The paper illustrates several commonly used heuristic procedures in the sciences and shows their utility in the solution of two (simple) linguistic problems. Some merits of heuristic procedures are briefly discussed.
