This article reviews the published material relating to the integration of computer aided design with automatic or semi-automatic off-line programming systems for coordinate measuring machines. Numerous techniques have been developed and demonstrated in research systems for the creation and validation of inspection plans and are now becoming available in commercial systems. Fully automated inspection planning is not yet generally available, primarily due to the problems of tolerancing 3D CAD models and transferring this information to OLP systems.
