AbstractThe word“cybernetics”, adopted internationally for the theory and science of automatics, is derived from the Greek wordkubernetesmeaning“steersman”. At present, while everybody is discussing the second industrial revolution caused by the advent of automation and its possible consequences on our society, the survey world sometimes seems to take little notice of these developments and not much has been published in the Commonwealth summarising the influence which automation may have on surveying.
