A couple's desire to have or not have children can be based on a number of factors. Parents or potential parents may perceive children as having both economic and noneconomic value. Noneco-nomic values correspond to the psychic satisfactions that parents may derive from children. These noneconomic advantages can be divided into the following eight categories (1, pp. 1-4)
