Crystallographic analyses of viruses are discussed with an emphasis on problems assiocated with data collection and processing as well as solving the phase problem for these macromolecular systems. The role that x‐ray synchrotron radiation has played in achieving the current state of knownledge of virus structure is presented and some of the anticipated applications of the next generation of synchrotron x‐ray sources are considered.
