摘要:

Shell Oil Company has produced a half‐hour, 16‐mm color film dealing with the tools, the methods, and the objectives of scientific research. EntitledA Light in Nature, the film was prepared to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the Royal Society in 1960, and it begins by tracing the evolution of science from the experimental philosophy of the 17th century to the specialized disciplines of today. Its theme concerns the understanding that comes as a result of research, with emphasis given to the “main goals” of contemporary science (“greater understanding of life itself, sought through chemical studies of the living cells” and “the study of the origin of the universe”). Schools, clubs, and other interested groups can borrow prints of the film free of charge from the Shell Oil Company, Public Relations Department, 50 West 50th Street, New York 20, N.Y.
