The pathologic expression of primary myocardial disease appears to depend on a combination of factors; thus the syndromes are found more often among debilitated persons in the U. S. and are very widespread in less affluent regions elsewhere. Research suggests that the lesions of Chagas' disease, for example, are worsened when experimental animals are subjected to forced exercise or nutritional deficiency.
