Flash tubes are finding increasing utility in high energy nuclear physics. They are easy to make and are particularly suitable for reliable particle detectors of large areas. A qualitative description of the construction, mechanism, and characteristics of flash tubes is given. The basic applications of the technique are appraised, with a simple account of the precision of measurement. The analysis of data for locating particle trajectories is discussed. Finally, flash tubes are compared with other detectors of similar performance.
