Colesevelam, a nonsystemic bile acid sequestrant, effectively lowers lipid levels in patients with hypercholesterolaemia when used as an adjunctive therapy to diet and exercise. Moreover, combination therapy with HMG CoA reductase inhibitors [statins] seems to be more effective than colesevelam or statins alone. Data from a number of recent studies demonstrating the value of colesevelam were presented at the 50th Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology [Orlando, US; March 2001].
