The Wandzura‐Wilczek and Burkhardt‐Cottingham sum rules have been used to suggest a relation between the distributions of transversely and longitudinally polarized quarks, and to deduce that there is little transverse quark polarization in the valence region, contrary to the situation for longitudinal polarization. It is shown that these deductions are unjustified.
